Comparative Effects of the Histopathology of Morinda lucida (Bent) and Alstonia boonei (De Wild) of Plasmodium berghei Infected Mice

Abstract
The histopathological effects of two plant extracts (Morinda lucida and Alstonia boonei) and their combinations were evaluated in-vivo at graded doses (400, 600, 800mg/kg) and 10mg/kg chloroquine in mice. The Plasmodium infected mice were sacrificed, the exercised liver and kidney of the animals were trimmed and fixed in Bouin solution. Photomicrographs of all the liver and kidney sections showed no visible lesions except the kidney section of infected and uninfected mice treated with 800 mg/kg of Alstonia boonei which showed an interstitial cellular infiltration and proteinaceous casts in their tubular lumina, and severe renal cortical congestion and tubular degeneration respectively. However, the liver sections of all the infected mice treated with Morinda lucida showed visible lesions that range from mild periportal fatty infiltration to severe portal congestion except the uninfected and infected mice liver treated with 600mg/kg of Alstonia boonei. All the infected mice treated with combine recipes of the two extracts at the three concentrations showed varying degrees of kidney and liver degenerations. The results showed that consumption of Morinda lucida extract at three tested concentrations, and Alstonia boonei extract at 800mg/kg dose may possibly be nephrotoxic and hence not safe for human consumption.
